Interview With The Renowned Make Up Artist, Daniel Sandler

Daniel Feature (600x424)

He’s been in the beauty industry for 25 years and his make up is a dream to use! He has won many beauty award including Cosmo Awards for Best Blusher and Best Brushes, and a Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) Award for his lipstick in the beauty and lifestyle brand section! His name is Daniel Sandler, and I have been privileged enough to ask this Make-Up Genius some questions, take a look at what he said:

Hi Daniel, firstly can I say what an honour it is to be able to ask you these questions. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer them!

You are very welcome.

You’re a successful make-up artist, when did you realise this was what you wanted to do as a career?

My father was a famous hairdresser in the 60s and70s and I knew I wanted to do something creative like him but not hairdressing, and when I was 18 years old I watched a makeup artist work on a shoot and realised that was what I wanted to do.

Where did you train?

I went onto to do training in make-up at the London College of Fashion and afterwards I began working quite quickly.

Who has been your favourite model and why?

I have worked with so many and it’s hard to pick just one.

If you could do the make up for anyone in the world past or present, who would it be ,and why?

I’d love to makeup Jessie J as she loves bold dramatic makeup and it’s rare that I get to experiment with colour and pigment. She can carry off any look, which would make her fab for me to work on!

What is your favourite make up look?

It’s not so much a look, but I love to create a flawless and naturally glamorous look.

What has been your favourite make up look that you have created?

There have been many makeup looks that have been faves but my most recent fave is from a shoot I did for my brand. I really love how the bronze smokey eye works so well with the pastel pink lip

You now have your own range of cosmetics, how did that come about?

From working with so many different brands as a jobbing makeup artist and seeing what was missing from my kit that would make my working life easier

What was the process like of creating your own range of cosmetics?

Very hard work, a very long process and quite frustrating at times.

What was it like seeing your products for the first time?

Thrilling, exciting!

Which is your favourite product from your collection and why?

My Watercolour Fluid Blusher as it’s unique and is my favourite product. My favourite shade is called ‘So Pretty’ as it’s a shade that makes a girl look really healthy and glowing.

Your watercolour blush has reached cult status, where did the idea of a liquid blush come from?

While working with on music videos, I had to mix 2 or 3 products to get the blusher to stay put under spot lights and hot conditions, I just knew I had to create a product that would work perfectly.

What is the best thing about being a makeup artist?

Helping women from whatever walk of life to be her most beautiful with makeup techniques and shades that bring out her natural beauty. I focus on someone’s assets and emphasise those, so features you’re less happy about aren’t so obvious.

What is your opinion on men’s make up, why is there such a stigma to men wearing make up or do you think that is changing?

I have created products which are used by men as well as women, for some men, not all, it is important to them that they look their best and are open to wearing products like my Instant Tan wash-off face powder as they don’t look as though they are wearing makeup.

Which make up artists have influenced you, if any?

Stephane Marais’ work with photographer Peter Lindbergh was always stunning. I loved the way he did brows and smokey eyes. He really created a unique look that could be spotted a mile off and was a serious influence in developing my own style..

Where else do you get your inspiration for your different looks?

Nature and retro makeup styles inspires me. I can be inspired by things as simple as a flower or a bird but I love certain periods of makeup such as the 1920’s or the 60’s and work that style into the makeup I create.

Have you got any insider tips for perfect make up application?

Blend, blend and blend!

What would you say is an essential make up product for every make up bag?

A good face primer, foundation, blusher, eyeliner, mascara, blusher and lipstick or gloss.

If you were to describe yourself in three words what would they be?

Loyal, Fussy & Impatient.

Are there any other areas that you would like to diversify into, such as skin care etc?

Not at the moment, there are more makeup products I want to work on first.

If you were to give advice to an aspiring make up artist, what would it be?

There are many different avenues of make-up shoots, shows, work with celebrities, department store working on a counter, you could specialise in bridal or you could do special effect make-up for film, television and theatre. The first thing you should do as early as possible is find out where your particular passion lies so that you can do everything you need to do to get into that area.

What does the future hold for you, are there any exciting plans in the pipeline?

I am about to launch in the USA through Urban Outfitters online. To have a presence in the US is a dream come true and I am excited that it will be easy for people to buy Watercolours easily.

Lastly, I ask this question to everyone, what is your definition of beauty ?

Beauty is about applying the correct amount of makeup to enhance yourself as well as the right amount to disguise the bits you don’t like. Its about getting the balance right.

Thank you so much Daniel for such a revealing and interesting interview; I’m so inspired by you, your ethos and your whole product range! There are so many items in your collection where I have been like, “Why hasn’t this been done before, it’s genius?”

So on behalf of all your customers (and clients) who have had dark circles under their eyes, blemishes, wrinkles, big noses or pigmentation issues; we thank you wholeheartedly for making our lives so much better!

Wishing you all the best in the future,

love beauty
