Mum's Know Best!

Hi, here is an article I wrote but was unable to post due to being in hospital xx

I’ve decided to write about Mum’s and their relationship to make-up, firstly as it is Mother’s day (Happy Mother’s Day, Mum!) and also after gaining inspiration from watching the film Burlesque for the millionth time! I know it sounds strange but please bear with me.  As I was watching the scene where Cher’s character (Tess) teaches Christina Aguilera’s character (Ali) how to put make-up on I realised, it was this one scene that made the film special for me. In the scene Ali had never had anyone teach her how to apply make up because her Mother had died when she was younger,  Tess takes her under her wing and shows her. It’s a lovely scene, I found it quite poignant. She explains to her methods of using mascara, lipstick, eyeliner and how  to use make up brushes, while softly applying Ali’s make up and transforming her look. Perhaps this scene is a visual representation of her character maturing, similarly young girls begin to wear make up when they are developing into young ladies. Although her instrustructions seem mundane, the sadness of teaching someone so late in life was the evident subtext of the scene and it pulled on my heart strings.  I realised how vital that matriarchal role is on your adult opinions of make up and life, and how lucky I was to have my Mum to guide me in both.

Airbrush, Or Not to Airbrush? That Is The Question

Over the past few days I have been pondering my opinions on airbrushing. It has become a hot topic over the last few years, due to the controversy surrounding magazines and advertisers covertly using the technique without readers’ knowledge. L’Oreal in particular has had many advertisements banned because they had airbrushed and exaggerated their photographs. More recently,  in October 2012, Christian Dior have had an advertisement of the DIORSHOW; New Look mascara, banned for use of airbrushing. In the advert Natalie Portman’s eyelashes were apparently “misleadingly exaggerated the likely effects of the product” according to rival L’Oreal, who had lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority.

Let's make Mother's Day – Molton's Day!

As Mother’s day approaches (10th March in case it has slipped your mind), the task of finding that perfect present begins again. Every year I can guarantee that my Mum’s answer to ‘What would you like this year?’ will be ‘Oh don’t be spending your money on me!’ She exasperatingly gives me no clue of what she wants, but I know that inside she would be slightly disappointed that there was nothing there next to her traditional bunch of daffodils. Loads of Mums never ask for a gift for Mother’s day, they are so modest and stoic, I personally think that they are  hardwired in their psyche to be hard to buy for. This is why it is nice to get them something a bit more luxurious from a well loved and trusted brand (but still affordable) to say a wholehearted, thank you! I think there is only one brand for the job, enter Molton Brown!

Premiere of Oz The Great and Powerful!

OZ is certainly a magical place that catches the imagination of generation after generation. There have been countless derivatives of the original enchanting narrative, and the characters and themes are just as engaging now as they were when OZ was created in 1900 in a novel by L. Frank Baum. Obviously, the most iconic so far has been the 1939 film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ with Judy Garland.

Personally, I identify with Dorothy the most, unfortunately as my love life seems to have resembled that of her journey on the infamous yellow brick road. I encountered a sweet but cowardly lion,  several brainless scarecrows and most dishearteningly, a LOT of tin men!! But I’ve heard that in the land of OZ the wizard will find me my ‘happy ever after’, mind you if I blagged myself a pair of those ruby shoes like Dorothy did, (I’m guessing they are Christian Louboutins?) I’d be more than happy with them!

Vivienne Westwood and Lush work together for a Climate Revolution

Vivienne Westwood has been rallying the public against climate change for a long time. The first time I became aware of it was when she was a guest on the Jonathon Ross show a few years ago. Since then she has been actively doing things to get more people involved. At the Paralympics Closing Ceremony, Vivienne unveiled her new campain, ‘Climate Revolution’. She had the words on her t-shirt and banner that she had hidden on the inside of one of her iconic dresses, which was made out of 7m of fabric. She was meant to be like Boudicca on her flaming chariot and when the cameras were pointed her way the dress was opened and then lifted up on spears to reveal her statement. She doesn’t do anything by halves! The Revolution had begun! Recently, in the new years edition of the Lush Times, they announced that Lush were joining Vivienne in her efforts to change our world for the better, in the Climate Revolution.

A Brief Discussion About The Psychology Of Make-Up

Raymond Cochrane in the book Contemporary Psychology: An Introduction, by Clive R. Hollin raises some interesting ideas about the psychology of wearing make up.  ‘We may notice too that our hypothetical stranger might be wearing make up to hide some of their original facial features.’ But is that the case? Do we collectively want to hide our original features or are we simply trying to enhance them? It’s an interesting thought which I guess we can only answer on a personal level. By asking ourselves is make up just making me look the best possible version of myself or am I hiding behind it?
